Migrating to OpenBIM

What OpenBIM does for you?

What is OpenBIM?

A BIM based process, which ensures that each design consultancy has the choice to use the “BEST OF BREED” application for their needs and that all disciplines can share as much information with each other as they choose, without the interference of software type, format or version. 3D interoperability is not what defines OpenBIM. OpenBIM communicates/links efficiently with multiple software platforms whether it is 1D, 2D or 3D .

What is IFC?

Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) is the open and neutral data format for openBIM.

Over 150 software applications support import and/or export IFC data. It has become the open standard for BIM data.

During construction on K-RITH, the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV many clashes occurred during the lower floor construction, which proved to be a costly process, together the Project Managers, Architects,  Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers and Structural Engineers, service co-ordination was done during construction using an OpenBIM to avoid any more clashes during construction, which saved cost & time.

SWITCH TO OPENBIM IF YOUR BIM DOES THIS:

  • software is not backwards compatible

  • software is slow if models are complex, views are numerous, detailing is complex, hardware is limited
  • software recommends 2D CAD package for detailing and documentation
  • software is extremely expensive for full licensing
  • software offers subscription based ownership exclusively
