Does Your BIM Dusi?

Date: Thursday, August 27, 2015

With the success of Team Graphisoft SA on their bikes all over South Africa, our very own “AA” Team (Alister & André) took on the Dusi Marathon representing Team Graphisoft SA in the water.

On Day 1, Alister’s amazing sense of direction and excellent steering skills took them straight into a rock and cracked the nose of the canoe.  André, forgetting he wasn’t in a vehicle with large tyres, sprained his ankle finding a pothole.  Day 2 proved to be a challenge, with one teammate (with a sprained ankle) and a running start.  Once they were in the water they made good time, making it down to Inanda Dam half an hour; earlier than even they had predicted.  Day 3 saw them (very gratefully) finish the race at Durban’s Blue Lagoon with some hard-earned rest.

About the Dusi

The Dusi Canoe Marathon (known as just the “Dusi”)was founded in 1951, and covers about 120km between the cities of Pietermaritzburg and Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, on the East Coast of South Africa.  It is the biggest canoeing event on the African continent, and one of the world's most popular river marathons, attracting between 1600 and 2000 paddlers each year. The race is unique in that it includes numerous portages where the paddlers carry their craft over hills, either to cut out rapids and cataracts, or to eliminate long loops in the river. Most of these portages are through thick bush on steep and undulating terrain, and several of them are around 4km in length.
